When you are looking for new golf courses to play and doing the necessary research what factors influence your decision making?

Does it really matter who the Director of Golf, GM or Head Golf Pro is at course as it relates to you deciding on whether you are going to play there or not?

When looking at golf course directories online you pretty much always see this information, I’m guilty of including it myself on a golf guide site that I manage.  As I was building out pages today I asked myself why am I including this information? Does it really matter?  Is there more important information that is more relevant to why a golfer would want to play this course?  I’m sure there is.  Unless the head pro is Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods or Fred Couples …. does it really matter to “joe golfer”?

I’m thinking or dropping that piece of info from future listings.  I’ve pretty much convinced myself that for the most part it doesn’t really matter.  Come to think of it does “grass type” matter?  As long as fairways and greens aren’t listed as “dirt” do you take “grass type” into consideration?

What are the important decision making factors?

Golf ball manufacturers have known for a long time that the secret to how far a golf ball flies is in the dimples.  Past research was generally based on trial and error.  Designing balls with varying patterns and dimple counts then measuring the flight results.

Now, scientist have employed a set of “Super Computers” each one thousands of times more powerful than your standard PC to crack the code of golf ball flight.  Results could lead to golf ball dimple designs that will have your average Joe booming drives like a Tiger.

“For a golf ball, drag reduction means the ball flies farther,” said Clinton Smith, of Arizona State University, a member of the research team.  “The long term goal is to optimize dimple design and realise the lowest drag possible,” Smith says.

I just finished reading a post from golftraxx.blogspot.com about DJ Gregory’s inspiring story. Born with cerebral palsy and told he would never walk, DJ just completed an amazing feat. DJ covered almost 1,000 miles as he walked every hole of every round of every tournament from the past PGA Tour season.

Great job! Congratulations DJ

Harding Park Golf Course is located less than one mile from the Pacific Ocean, near scenic Skyline Boulevard and the renowned San Francisco Zoo. Originally designed by Willie Watson in 1925, the majestic, tree-lined layout has played host to many prestigious golf events.

A major renovation and restoration of this historic golf course began in the spring of 2002. The 15 month long project expanded the course from 6,743 to 7,200 yards along with major upgrades to the driving range and clubhouse, bringing them up to PGA Tour standards.

Will the tough course conditions ruin “Masters Sunday”?

As it stands so far .. I am not a fan of what we have watched over the last 3 days.  I missed not hearing many “Augusta Roars” as I walked the grounds on Thursday and Friday, due to the lack of birdies and the almost non existent eagles.  The Masters needs to have birdies and eagles and Sunday back nine charges … I don’t know how we can expect any Sunday charge under these conditions, I feel we will just be watching guys trying to hang on and make pars, not as exciting.

The big story out of Hawaii so far does have to do with a young player, but that young player that has imerged is not the one that media had an eye on when the Sony Open began on Thursday. Tadd Fujikawa who just turned 16 on Monday has become the youngest player in 50 years to make a cut in a PGA Tour event. Fujikawa from Hawaii strolled up the 18th fairway yesterday to an incredible ovation on his way to carding a second round 4 under 66 for a two day total of 3 under, and with the cut coming at even par, his score was good enough to put him through to the weekend. Although not as popular as Michelle Wie at the start of the week, Fujikawa’s performance so far has gone a long way to maybe making him the most newsworthy junior golfer in Hawaii. This is not the first time Fujikawa’s name has popped up on the PGA Tour, he made news when he qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot last year.

Michelle Wie continued to struggle with her driving and failed again in her latest attempt to play with the men. I do think it is time to use the word “fail” with some meaning. In her most recent tournaments on the PGA Tour there has really been nothing positive that Michelle can take away from her experience, the novelty must surely have wore off for most people and it is definitely time that the decision makers in the Wie camp re-evaluate their plan to lead Michelle onto a successful and long carreer in golf. It was reported that there was a sign in a backyard on the first fairway that read “Wie !! Why??”. While Wie still has many supporters as is evident by the size of the gallery that follows her, the number of fans who have seen enough is growing. As it is said that golf is a reflection of life, and how golfers can vividly remember a bad shot over hundreds of good ones, so do we vividly remember a negative experience over hundreds of positive ones, and a golfers can attest often that bad memory effects and haunts us for a long long time.
