Golf ball manufacturers have known for a long time that the secret to how far a golf ball flies is in the dimples.  Past research was generally based on trial and error.  Designing balls with varying patterns and dimple counts then measuring the flight results.

Now, scientist have employed a set of “Super Computers” each one thousands of times more powerful than your standard PC to crack the code of golf ball flight.  Results could lead to golf ball dimple designs that will have your average Joe booming drives like a Tiger.

“For a golf ball, drag reduction means the ball flies farther,” said Clinton Smith, of Arizona State University, a member of the research team.  “The long term goal is to optimize dimple design and realise the lowest drag possible,” Smith says.
